Heartbreak in Natchitoches

Originally, for Sunday afternoon, I was looking forward to this little dream café in historic Natchitoches, LA called Laysone’s Restaurant.Why you might ask?Two words: Meat and Pie.My logic, blindingly simple, I like meat and I like pies, so why not both?The Laysone’s meatpie awaited my ravenous appetite.

In a tragedy for the ages, turns out Laysone’s is closed on Sundays so the infamous meatpies will have to wait until another visit.

Begrudgingly, we sauntered down the road to another well regarded Natchitoches haunt Mama’s Oyster House.

On the menu this afternoon was some seafood gumbo, a crawfish etouffee, blackened gator tail and a bread pudding with rum sauce finish.In sum, a healthy smattering of native Louisiana fare.

Both the gumbo and etouffee were solid, hearty options, and the blackened gator tail tasted, shockingly, like chewy blackened chicken.While certainly worth trying for novelty, personally I’m inclined to think that alligators are better suited as handbags and boots.The bread pudding satisfied the sweet tooth for dessert, and we clattered spoons a few times skirmishing for the last morsel.

Natchitoches itself seemed like an historic place, and claims to be the oldest town in the Louisiana Purchase. A longer visit may be in order on the next go round.

Spanky’s rose to the top of my list of Lubbock eateries to sample after being recommended by several friends throughout the week.Its fate was sealed when I caught my first glimpse of the menu and noticed the “He-Man Woman Hater Burger”, which immediately piqued my curiosity (and large appetite).This Lubbock landmark, allegedly started by a couple of the more successful campus bookies, is right across the street from campus and a stone’s throw from the stadium.

After you figure out exactly how Spanky’s complex ordering and service system works (here’s a hint: don’t ask the surly waitresses), which is a unique combination of bar service, full service, and buffet self serve; you will be ready to dig into some pretty solid bar food.

Although I went there for the burger, the fried cheese stole the show. Appropriate considering it’s the flagship item on their menu.This lightly battered (not breaded) fried cheese was quite simply the best cheese sticks I have ever had..Even our local Wisconsin cheese expert begrudgingly agreed….It’s remarkable how much joy fried cheese can bring to a persons life

The burger itself was large and imposing, though not overly noteworthy.The middle bun adds to the “He-Man’s” formidable size, but I thought it dried the burger out a bit for my taste, and all that bun frankly just gets in my way.Though, given the choice I would definitely order it again and simply use the middle bun as a coaster.

Final verdict: worth it for the fried cheese alone.

If it’s one thing I love about driving in Texas, it’s getting off the highway and discovering some of the unique gems Texas has to offer along pristine ribbons of alluring backroads. On the way out to Odessa, we had to make one such detour to satisfy a sweet tooth or two.

Let me tell you straight up: If you are ever driving out to West Texas, take a detour, and stop in Dublin, Texas to go to Dublin Dr. Pepper.Dublin Dr. Pepper is one of the original Dr. Pepper bottling plants, and they still make it the original way: with cane sugar, and I believe they are the only place remaining that does so.

Of course, the highlight of any trip to Dublin Dr. Pepper is a rather unassuming choice on the yellowed backlit menu board:the Dr. Pepper Shake.While I’m not really a soda drinker (at all) I do consider myself something of a milkshake enthusiast.This delightful concoction is well worth a sample, and could be considered a uniquely Texas experience.

The Dr. Pepper shake is really quite simple, basically a milkshake made with Dr. Pepper Syrup (instead of Chocolate) and a couple scoops of Blue Bell vanilla Ice Cream.After gleefully asking for a custom made medium size shake (they normally only come in small), I spent the next 30 miles blissfully slurping away in cool, creamy, sugar heaven.

Ian’s Pizza – The State Street Staple…

Like any good college town worth its salt, Madison has no shortage of pizza shops willing to satisfy the hunger of the late night post close crowd.Considering the 40,000+ dedicated scholars attending the Badger Institute of Higher Learning, having a handful of vendors of this timeless college mainstay are a must.And given the fickle nature of your average non committal college coed, having pizza available by the slice is a prerequisite.
But ask any hoodie clad intellectual where to find landmark pies amidst the bustle of legendary State Street, and they will surely point a pudgy finger or two in the direction of Ian’s Pizza.Ian’s is the staple among Madison pizza joints, and if their line at 2am is any indication, it’s a slice worth waiting over a half hour for.

Although I was eager to sample Ian’s, long lines and I have never been on speaking terms.As such, I sauntered into Ian’s for a quick bite to eat before we hit the town for a night of fishbowls and cheap swill.From among the dozens of selections enticingly tucked beneath the display cases, I settled on a familiar buffalo chicken, and a not so familiar “macaroni and cheese” slice.My enthusiasm was slightly tempered after I had to fork over seven bucks to the cashier; evidently dairy prices are suffering inflationary pressures in the CheeseState.
The pizza is straightforward and unpretentious.The buffalo chicken was traditional, and satisfying despite the gobs of bleu cheese (which is a personal distaste of mine).The macaroni and cheese, however, was an especially refreshing departure from the norm.The addition of mac n’ cheese adds another layer of gooey goodness to the slice.With the added texture of mealy noodles and another welcome layer of cheese (can you really ever have too much cheese?) the mac n’ cheese slice was an indulgent spin on regular pizza.It’s famous at Ian’s for a reason, and I highly endorse it.

Ian’s is the place to go in Madison if you are looking for a unique slice or two, and especially when you get that 2am hankering for a satisfying snack after a hard night of studying….
Just be sure to try the mac and cheese….
